March 2023 Meeting Minutes
March 18, 2023 HeadQuarters Meeting

I kicked off the business by reporting on the following upcoming events.

  • WORLD CUP of beer homebrew competition
Eric is the cellar master.  Calvin & I judged that morning.
Final judging will be at 21st Amendment in San Leandro
Saturday, April 1, 2023 morning, afternoon awards presentation & celebration
  • BABO (Bay Area Brew-Off at the Alameda County Fair)
Entries will be due from April 1st to the 13th.
Final judging at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton April 15.

Altho most competitions are charging $15 and up, to enter.
I reminded attendees that the entry fee is $3.00 this year (due to a bureaucratic issue at the fair).
BABO is a BJCP competition and draws the same judges as Cal State, World Cup and the Western Regionals of the National Homebrew Competition.
AND Clandestine Brewing is a drop-off.
You’re unlikely to get an opportunity for excellent quality, objective feedback on your homebrew at such a low cost and so conveniently.
    Instructions and registration online.
  • The San Andreas Malts have organized an Oyster Barbecue & Beer Fest for April 16
The following is from a flyer posted by the San Francisco Homebrewer’s Guild

This unmpteenth annual celebration by the San Andreas Malts is a can’t miss opportunity to suck down unlimited oysters and compare your brews with another club in the best setting possible.
If you shuck them you can suck them, otherwise they will be BBQ’d to your hearts content with three special sauces.Grills will be also available to BBQ anything else you bring. This a great opportunity to compare notes and insults in an idyllic setting.
RSVP: Please let us know by April 5th if you are planning to go and Venmo the money to @SFJerry to confirm your spot
    WHEN: Sunday April 16, Noon-Dusk,
    WHERE: San Pedro Park, Pacifica
BRING: Eating utensils, a vessel from which to drink, and a share salad/side dish/appetizer/dessert and any protein you want to grill
Please bring beer to share – cans, bottles, growlers and kegs all welcome as long as it’s homebrew
    PRICES: Malts $15; Guests $20; Non-oyster eaters – $8.

Eric & I attended the last one in 2019.
San Pedro Park is a nice, clean park with great amenities including picnic tables & benches and bathrooms.
  • The Draught Board is working on organizing a North Berkeley brewery crawl
The proposed date will be Saturday May 20, unfortunately the May HeadQuaters meeting date.
    Email to follow with details.

  • NCHF the Northern California Homebrewer’s Festival
Is typically the 3rd Saturday in September
Watch for emails with theme and keg competition details
  • We didn’t set a specific beer theme for April, so “Brewer’s Choice”.
Let’s aim for Maibock for May.

Altho not discussed at the meeting.
Members have asked about organizing Sensory Training (otherwise known as off flavor training).
The last time I offered the training was in 2014, way too long ago.
So I will be following up to offer this training again.

After a 4 year hiatus (due to COVID), members voted on the first club challenge of 2023- Stouts.
Congratulations to the following brewers!
1st place – Jeremiah’s oatmeal stout.
2nd place – Eric’s American Stout.
3rd place – Jeremy’s clone of Founder’s Breakfast Stout.
* Honorable mention to Nick for his Irish Stout.

We will announce the next club challenge soon.

We sampled 6 more homebrews and 5 commercial beers.

Thank you Clandestine Brewing for allowing us to meet at your facility.

Thanks to everyone sharing beer,
Roger.
